Cross disciplinary Intraternships

The principle behind the INTERNAL INTERNSHIP (INTRATERNSHIP) is to encourage people to learn from each other.  The benefits of this programme are innumerable, we’ll list a few

  1. It encourages people to teach other people in a controlled environment
  2. It gives employees a sense of purpose because their expertise is being recognised as expertise (no matter how small it is)
  3. It forms part of the organisation’s Employee Recognition Scheme.  Each person is given a certificate at the end of the process.  This is a useful bargaining tool for promotions or job seeking.
  4. It contributes to the broader knowledge within the organisation
  5. Knowledge gets retained and spread throughout the organisation, this reduces the risk of skills being lost should a person leave the organisation
  6. It lets the outside world know that there is continuity in the organisation.

YOU’D BE MAKING A MISTAKE BY JUST INCLUDING PEOPLE IN THE SAME DIVISION

The same division or department.  Companies (both state and private) are eco-systems where every division or department is linked to another in some way. 

The sales department is intrinsically linked to the marketing department as well as the delivery department.  However, the finance department is a core component in the sales process.  If you are running a sales INTRATERSNSHIP programme, including people from marketing and sales is a good idea.  Processes and innovations can be shared across these departments.

The delivery department (those people that actually deliver the product or service) will have a fair idea of what can be sold and when and to who.  They talk to the those people in your customers that the salespeople don’t talk to.  They’ll have an insight into what the customer might actually need.  Also, delivery teams are frequently frustrated by what the salespeople sometimes sell, or promise.  Their input in the sales process could increase revenue or streamline processes.
