With the South African economy struggling and training budgets under stress the most viable alternative is to run an internal training programme. A typical session involves someone telling other people how to do something.
As we’ve discussed before this has limited efficacy. It’s a one-way conversation. However with a little bit of modification this one-way method can incorporate other views and opinions.
Expanding on the principle that everyone is an expert at something, employees are actually quite happy to share information with their peers in the right environment. It’s simply a matter of creating that environment.
Our experience tells us that groups of about 8-10 people who meet every two weeks works very well. The starting point is the appointment of the subject matter expert for each session. That subject matter expert will explain how they go about doing what their job entails. This is not designed to be a technical session, unless its for people who are technical by nature. The subject matter expert is then encouraged to ask their peers how they may go about doing a similar task
